August 3 was a banner day for our new direction of hosting classes and markets. We had a fantastic turn out – thanks to all who came and supported the artists and Cultus Bay Gardens.
The many wonderful vendors made it so special and I appreciate all who were willing to try out this venue. Both the vendors and many people who’d never been back on the property, when it was a retail nursery, were amazed by the garden setting. Being able to enjoy art work in an old floriferous garden makes for a very special day.
We are already planning on another Summer Market next year with other exciting vendors as well as many that participated this year.
We will also be hosting our traditional Holiday Open House Art & Craft Market November 29 & 30, December 1, 7 & 8.
Siri Bardarson was one of the delightful vendors August 3.
Linda Apsitis had many unusual succulents as well as living roof bird houses.
The entrance to the market space was festooned with strung dahlias and there were plenty of relaxing places to sit and enjoy the garden when not checking out the vendors wares under the colorful umbrellas.
Upcoming Classes
Fall Floral class on September 19th – 11:30 am – 3:30 pm
Brita Fisher will be the instructor for upcoming classes the Northwest Horticulture Society has asked us to teach at the gardens.
With a wide selection of late summer flowers and foliage including diverse, delicious dahlias, Brita’s sensitive eye and creative skills will guide you in creating a stunning arrangement for your home in a vessel of your choice.
You can use warm colors reflecting the Indian summer or chose from softer hydrangeas in tones of pink, purples and whites. Working under the shade of the purple-leafed Catalpa (Catalpa erubescens ‘Purpurea’) on raised benches you will be able to see your arrangement from all sides.
After your floral arrangements are complete we’ll sit and enjoy a pleasant lunch in the shade of the lathe house followed by Mary’s well-known pie.
Lunch, vase and all floral material included in the price.

Fall Wreath Class – October 17th – 10 am – 12 pm
Northwest Horticulture Society
With the wreath forms provided, created from a variety of natural materials, you will be able to construct a minimal to abundant wreath guided by Brita’s tried and true techniques. The inspirational materials will range from dried flowers to grasses and seed pods or fresh hydrangeas that will age nicely on your wreath.
The focus will be on a fall wreath suitable for the harvest season going into Thanksgiving. Later the wreath form can be reused to create a holiday wreath.
Coffee, tea and homemade cookies will be on hand to keep your energy up.

Nettle Cordage Making – Kaili Plummer-Slate
October 26th – 1pm – 3 pm
Kaili has been weaving baskets and collecting traditional materials for many years – from flying to Alaska to collect cedar bark to collecting pine needles and nettles – she has a wide range of skills and is an experienced basketry teacher.
We will explore the diverse uses of nettle as well as sample nettle pesto. You will NOT get stung as you learn how to collect and prepare cordage. The cordage can use when you take the cedar bark basket class the following Sunday. More details on our class description pages. REGISTER HERE
Cedar Bark Basket Pouch – Kaili Plummer-Slate
October 27th – 11 am – 4 pm
From material Kaili collected in SE Alaska, with her mentor, you will learn to work with this supple, lovely, native tree to create a small pouch-shaped basket that can be hung from the nettle cordage you’ve made the day before ~ should you choose to take both classes!

Sensational Salads – Leah M Nguyen
November 2nd – 11am – 1:30 pm
Leah is hands down my favorite salad maker – she has always had a knack for putting together the most innovative and perfect combinations of ingredients!
She will discuss her ‘philosophy of salad making’ to use her words, explaining proportions / dimensional cuts of ingredients and why that makes a difference. To say nothing of herbs and all they offer….
You will go home with new taste sensations, great recipes, and dressing to make your life tastier as well as healthier! REGISTER HERE
