Early July Newsletter

In June I got to help this dynamic couple with a fabulous event in Yosemite, aimed at enriching those not likely to get to enjoy camping, rock climbing and great local food. United in Yosemite  was in its second year and Kate Rutherford  of Farm to Crag asked chef Matt Dillon to prepare a feast for the 200 plus young folks from all across the country that were sponsored to attend this 4 day event. Kate is employed by Patagonia (since she’s a renowned climber) for alpine woman’s gear advice and testing.

NOW Matt Dillon will be preparing incredible food on the last day of our Summer Arts & Crafts Market as a FUNDRAISER for Whidbey Island Nourishes .

Sunday afternoon  July 28th, come enjoy the many market vendors and bring your wine and picnic blanket or chairs, so you can stay for an amazing dinner by Matt. He’s bringing his wood fired oven truck and many delicious salads, bread, chips and roasted lamb that’s all finger and lip smacking good.

Earlier on Sunday, at 11 am Brita Fisher will be having a Floral Arrangement class complete with light lunch provided by Matt, as well as cooling beverages on the brick terrace behind the house.

Summer Floral at Cultus Bay Gardens tickets available here.

The above floral arrangement is this weeks creation for The Corson Building restaurant in Georgetown. Brita does all their floral work each week as well as many weddings. You’ll be learning from a woman with a great eye!

The market is fast approaching and I hope you’ll find a day to come browse the many artists and craftspeople. I think we have 27 this year and some are from the peninsula, one from Bellingham, Vahson Island and Seattle – even an amazing earring artist from Florida – so you’ll see things you’ve never found on Whidbey before.

Lots of parking in the field and cold beverages for sale by the kids as well as tasty treats.

I’m beyond thrilled that Renata Nguyen is coming from Florida with her gorgeous beaded and macrame earrings. She is a perfectionist and so talented. She’s been crafting for months to bring a large selection of her beautiful work.

We are also lucky she’s going to teach a simple macrame class for beginners the monday after the market. It’s only $30.00 with supplies included. You can be inspired and learn some great knots – maybe go on to make your own earrings! Limit 6 people.

The link and information for the class is here – Macrame Keychain

Tom Fisher will have a large selection of cutting boards, trays, spoons and hand carved bowls available. He’ll be out or town but I’ll be handling his sales so see me at the Maemae clothing and lunch bag area under the catalpa tree!

First time vendor at my market will be Amy Ockerlander from the Pt Townsend. She has Forest Elf Farm and grows gorgeous flowers as well as makes these unique pajaki. Inspired by the Polish tradition she uses dried flowers as well as paper in her creations.

Cat McCadden  of Grace Gow Jewelry will be with us for the first time – from Vashon Island with her sea inspired jewelry – rings, necklaces and earrings – some with precious stones and gold and some lower priced but fun work as well. Happy she’ll join us this year!

Jill Yetman of @thelazyglazer is also a first time seller at the market. She’ll have all sorts of work from vases to mugs and more. Welcome Jill.

Lindsay Kelley of Scandi candle is back after a very successful Winter Market. Her candles smell so good – not over powering or artificial and they burn so very long. I’m a snob when it comes to scented candles and hers I love. Also her mom joins her with her watercolors so that’s sweet.

Jane Fund of Golden Ginkgo ceramics will be her for her first Summer Market with completely new work! A big change from the porcelain and gold work of the Winter Market.

I’m very excited to offer for the first time a class on making your own watercolors from plants and local pigments taught by Dr Alison Webb. With a biology degree as well as artist Alison is booked most weekends teaching in King County. We are fortunate to have her this September 14th for Foraging Color- Creating Watercolor Paints from Natural Materials

Bring your lunch and I’ll serve you pie. Do read her description in this link even if this isn’t your year for crafting paint – it’s fascinating what she will cover.

Please come support the many artists and enjoy a blissfully beautiful time in the garden setting – it makes for most peoples favorite summer market. Enough variety, great setting and not overwhelmingly huge. And the food… what more could you want from a summer weekend?

Next summers Indigo Workshop Weekend as well as a one day Shibori Technique class are already scheduled due to our teacher Elins busy schedule.

Shibori Techniques – Sewing and Wrapping  will be Friday July 11.

I’ll get the link for the Indigo class by the next newsletter. Remember Elin teaches and shows her textiles all over the world and we only get her in my gardens because we are friends so it’s super special you can get in on her knowledge right here for a decent price!

Hope to see you ALL at the end of the month!

Oh my I have exciting news – our grandchild Pasha Nguyen ( whose father pasted in March ) got early acceptance into UW! They would be starting their freshmen year of high school but instead will begin at UW in the fall within the Robinson School of Young Scholars. My fundraising for them was a success too, Raised a bit of $2,000 for their college fund. They will be selling cookies and drinks at the Summer Market too so stop by and congratulate them on their hard work.

Stay cool and drink lots of water
