Explore the visual and texture technique known as shibori. Shaped resist techniques such as tying, binding, pleating, stitching, knotting, clamping, and pole wrapping, are easy to learn and offer a limitless interaction of pattern and discoveries.
The first Saturday we begin by stitching a single layer of cloth, and progress to stitching on folded cloth. Once the basic stitches are presented you can create more complex, mirrored, and asymmetrical patterns. We will discuss stitch size, row placement, and how to plan your own patterns.
The second Saturday we will begin class by pulling up and tying off your stitched patterns from the previous Saturday. We will then explore patterning techniques: binding to a flexible core, arashi and bomaki shibori on pvc pipe, and itajime shibori (fold and clamp).
Elin will bring historical and contemporary examples. Shibori has been practiced in many cultures for many centuries. You will be part of living tradition!
The workshop will take place over two Saturdays with a week in between for you to experiment on your own. This is a stitching class only, we will not dye the cloth during class. In September a one-day indigo class will be offered in order for you to dye your shibori pieces.
Supply fee $35 – to be paid directly to Elin at the class
Supply fee includes 2 yards of Japanese yukata cloth, thread, needles, markers, string, a 1.5″ rope and other tools for creating resist patterns.
The following 4 photos show patterns obtainable with the 1.5″ rope.
Elin will have all the supplies for the first Saturday class, but if you wish to use your own supplies, feel free to bring them.
1. A pair of scissors to cut thread and snip cloth.
2. Any thread or needles you like to use for stitched shibori.
3. Thimble, if you like to use one.
For the second Saturday – we will talk about these supplies on the first Saturday.
1. PVC pipe: 1-2 foot lengths of 2”-8” diameter.
2. Clamping device: C-clamps, spring clamps, bulldog clips, etc.
3. Shapes for clamping: jar lids, wooden or plexi shapes in sets of 2 per shape.
