Patti King & – Bojagi Instructors

A unique offering with TWO bojagi instructors, out local talent Patti King and textile artist Hyunjoo Cho, from Korea. These women are good friends and offer a dynamic experience to this old and beautiful craft. The class will be offered outside at Cultus Bay Gardens, in a shaded area of the garden.

Take a journey into pure creativity as you learn the art of Bojagi – the Korean wrapping cloth. With simple tools – just needle and thread – you will hand stitch a small patchwork piece using beautiful scraps of cloth from Korea – silk, ramie and hemp – and enjoy creating without rules or plans and watching the small pieces become a finished whole. This one-day workshop offers a meditative experience based on the repetitive process of hand-stitching and supports the concept of not wasting by honoring each small scrap of cloth.

Open to all levels of stitching experience, this class offers students an opportunity to focus on the many aesthetic decisions that are a part of the creative process and to end the day with a small and totally unique piece of textile art ~ a pure expression of the maker’s hand.

Patti King has been making art based on  bojagi for the past 18 years and has spent time in Korea exploring their textile traditions while developing her own interpretations of these ancient arts. Her friendship with Hyunjoo has expanded her textile world and we can benefit from their combined knowledge.

Patti has curated three exhibitions featuring Korean textile arts, two of which were focused on bojagi. She curated ‘Bojagi Journey 2023’ which ran for 10 weeks at the Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fiber Art Museum in LaConner, WA. That exhibit included some of Hyunjoo’s work.

My homemade pie and tea completes the day!

The above bojagi were done by beginning students in earlier classes Patti taught.
