  • April 27, 2019 ~ Pie Making

    Mary Fisher – instructor

    Saturday, April 27th

    1- 3 pm

$49.00 – Coffee / tea & pie while discussing methods to pie success.

You’ll make a fruit pie – to bake at home – with hands-on guidance to a perfect crust. Handout with  recipes & filling suggestions for exciting taste combinations.

The best pies are known for their crusts – so why use store bought when you can master this?

Pie making is one of the best things I learned from my mom – who really didn’t like to cook – but was very fond of desserts.

I find sharing a pie gets right to the heart of things – food made with love, often with home grown fruits, and sweetened just enough to call it dessert but not overly sweet.

We will begin the class by having a slice of my pie with tea or coffee with some pie focused conversation.

Each person will make an apple / raspberry pie which you will take home to bake. The recipe for the crust with filling options will have to ready to try other pies.

Starting with the crust – which really is foolproof – you will learn the tricks of mixing and rolling it out. You will leave empowered to spread the joy of giving a home-baked pie to your friends, family or someone in a tough spot.

If these kids ( great niece and nephews ) can make a killer pie on the first try I bet you can too.

They were very pleased with the results as well as the fruit sampling they did throughout the process.

Henry Maier, Nico Rohwer and Adele Rohwer were all excellent students.

  • June 8, 2019 ~ Wax on Workshop – Silver Ring Making

Instructor – Cat McCadden of Grace Gow Jewelry

    Saturday, June 8

    12 pm – 3 pm

    $160.00

This carving party, led by Vashon Island-based jeweler Cat McCadden, is where a few tools and a dash of instruction combine to fuel creativity. Using your own hands, your result is an awesome sterling silver ring — that you’ve made!

To best see Cat’s work please go to this link gracegow.com

I saw Cat’s work initially at Honed, a Seattle jewelry shop located in Chophouse Row. I immediately loved her use of barnacles, crab claws and parts of found shells from her Vashon Island home. Delicate to larger pieces – with the sensitivity of our Pacific Northwest island life style. Never dreamed she’d be able to teach a class as well.

She’s very organized and has offered classes before so really has it down as to process and delivery!

Plus she’s a warm human being that’s a delight to be around.

Class will begin with a yummy lunch in the garden and then you’ll get to creating your own special ring.

With able instructions each person will make something just right for themselves. She will take your wax designs back and cast them into sterling silver and do whatever finishing is needed.Within 3 weeks your completed ring gets mailed to you.

Dr Frank Rohwer – President and Chief Scientist Delta Waterfowl Bismark North Dakota and Dr Sievert Rohwer – Professor and Curator of Birds Burke Museum ~ Emeritus University of Washington

From the class on Saturday, April 6, 2019

Despite some rain we had a fantastic day exploring and learning from the wealth of knowledge of both Sievert and Frank Rohwer. From mist netting, candling eggs ( to see how far along they are in the incubation ) to learning about molt, and nesting territories it was a full and diverse day. A walk through the trails where Sievert explained about tree growth and we saw how quickly beavers could work it was a very full experience.

Gardening Tips – Pruning is Good

An elegant old garden I’ve had the pleasure to work on belongs to Sally Campbell, seen here with her Stewartia monadelpha which I pruned this winter.

Sometimes you just need encouragement and reasoning from another set of eyes.

Working with someone you trust can make it easier to make some radical moves. I found that when I explained why I’d remove a large limb from any given plant it then allowed Sally to see it a new way.

One of Sally’s prize maples is a Golden Full Moon along the edge of the house. It had a double trunk which I thought looked very awkward.

The photo shows the extra trunk circled in green. In the same area was a very large old specimen of a rhody she got because of it’s name. It had never really looked good apparently. Nearby was a dramatic rhody with rusty undersides to the leaves. My suggestion was to remove the ill looking Rhododendron so the understory Podocarpus could show up more and the really gorgeous remaining rhody could steal the show.

It was a happy solution as well as a bold move – both Sally and I think it looks much better!

A new and exciting idea we are kicking off is the SUMMER MARKET on Saturday August 3 an all day art / craft market open to the public. Hours will be 10 am – 6 pm

We’ve had such good reception to our Holiday Open House we want to extend the fun by hosting a larger market with fabulous craftspeople making high quality goods. I’ll get a page up on the website as soon as I get more photos and artists signed up. At this point hold the date so you can come see the diverse and wonderful things the people are making – ceramics, textiles, jewelry, clothing, flower essences, paper crafts, rock mandalas and more….

Happy Gardening

Hope to see you at some of our wonderful classes!
